How to Program RCA Universal Remote

You may find it confusing to program your RCA universal remote control if you have never done it before. Our team has been there -and we are here to guide you through the entire process from start to finish.

There are a couple of different ways you can go about doing this, depending on whether your remote has a Code Search button, or whether you have a device code for the gear you want to pair with the remote.

A code search button is available on RCA universal remote controls:

The easiest way to pair devices is by directly entering the device codes into the remote control if your remote has a Code Search button.

  • You will need to locate the device code for the equipment that you wish to control. You can find this code in the manual of your remote control or by using the RCA remote code finder.
  • Make sure the equipment you wish to pair is switched on.
  • Using the remote control, press and hold the Code Search button until the pairing is complete.
  • Holding down the Code Search Button, press the button on the universal remote that matches the piece of equipment you want to pair (e.g. if you are pairing your new TV to your new universal remote, press the key for TV). On the remote control, you will see a blinking light for a short period of time, and then it will stay on.
  • Enter the device remote code from Step 1 into the remote control. This should turn off the light on the remote control.
  • Make sure that the remote works properly. Make sure to try different functions on the remote to ensure that it works. In that case, you have succeeded! In the case that it does not, please continue to the next set of instructions.

If a code does not work, or you are unable to find one for your device, you can also use the Code Search button to run through all possible RCA universal remote codes until you find one that will work.

  • You will need to turn on the equipment you wish to pair.
  • If you press and hold the Code Search button on the universal remote control, the light will turn on.
  • Keeping your finger on the Code Search Button, press the button on the universal remote that corresponds to the equipment you are pairing (e.g.if it’s a DVR, press the button for DVR). There will be a blinking of the light on the remote control once and then it will remain steady.
  • To send the next code to the equipment, you need to press the power button on the universal remote. Make sure to keep pressing it up until the equipment is turned off. If this happens, you have found a working remote code. When the indicator light blinks four times when you press the power button, you have already tried all the remote codes available and the remote may not work with your equipment.
  • You can save the remote code by pressing the Enter button on the universal remote.
  • Make sure that the universal remote works correctly before storing it. If it works properly, you are all set. Otherwise, you must repeat the process.

An RCA universal remote that lacks a code search button:

In the case of remote controls without a Code Search button, the programming process is a little different:

  • To control the equipment, turn it on.
  • On the universal remote, press and hold the button that corresponds to the device you’re pairing (e.g., if it’s a DVD player, press the DVD button). The remote’s light will blink once, then remain steady.
  • Keeping the device button pressed, press the power button on the universal remote until the light turns on and off (about three seconds).
  • Remove the remote from the wall. You should see a light on the power button to indicate you are in pairing mode. Repeat steps 2 and 3 if it does not appear.
  • You can scan through the available remote codes by pressing the power button on your universal remote. You have found your universal remote code when your equipment turns off. You have gone through the entire list and the remote is unlikely to work for your equipment if its indicator light blinks four times.
  • Save the remote code by pressing Stop on the universal remote control.
  • Make sure the functions of the remote are working correctly.
